What to do if you are involved in a road traffic accident?

What to do if you caused a road traffic accident (at-fault party):

  • Within 10 calendar days of the accident, submit the completed agreed statement form and a statement explaining the circumstances of the accident.
  • Submit photos of the accident scene and vehicle damage.

You can provide the required information by filling out a claim on the Compensa portal as the at-fault party.

If it is not possible to submit the information via the portal, you can send it by email to atlidzibas@compensa.lv.

What to do if you were involved in a road traffic accident (injured party): Report immediately to the State Police or complete the agreed statement form.

The agreed statement form can be completed if:

  • Only two vehicles are slightly damaged and can continue driving, i.e., the vehicles have no damage that prevents them from driving or violates traffic rules.
  • No people are injured and no third-party property is damaged.
  • Both drivers can agree on the circumstances of the accident.

Important! If it is not possible to reach an agreement with the other party on completing the agreed statement form, call the Traffic Police!

The agreed statement form can be completed electronically using the LTAB mobile app or by filling out the paper form.

You must report to the Traffic Police if:

  • People are injured in the accident.
  • Third-party property is damaged.
  • Vehicles are damaged and cannot or are not allowed to participate in traffic according to traffic rules.
  • More than two vehicles are damaged.

Important! Do not move the vehicles or touch any objects related to the accident until the Traffic Police arrive. After the police arrive, follow their instructions.

What to do if the accident occurs abroad:

  • According to the laws of the country, report the accident to the police or complete the agreed statement form.
  • Record the registration details and insurers of the vehicles involved.
  • Take photos of the vehicles and the accident scene.
  • If the accident occurred in a European Economic Area (EEA) country, contact the representative of the at-fault party’s insurer in Latvia or the Latvian Motor Insurers Bureau, which will help determine the insurance company to submit your claim to.
  • If the accident occurred in a Green Card system country, the claim must be submitted in that country to the at-fault party’s insurer. If this is not possible, after returning to Latvia, contact the Latvian Motor Insurers Bureau for guidance on where and how to submit your claim.

What to do if you need emergency or assistance services?

If an accident occurs and you need roadside assistance, call 8888 or, if you are abroad, +371 6755 8888.

Assistance coverage includes:

  • Transporting the vehicle after an accident or breakdown.
  • Starting the engine using jumper cables.
  • Replacing a flat tire with the spare tire in the vehicle.
  • Fuel delivery if you unexpectedly run out of fuel.
  • Help with safety system issues.
  • Unlocking blocked doors.
  • Unlocking automatic transmission gearboxes.
  • Minor repairs, such as temporary covering of broken glass, topping up coolant, defrosting door locks, and securing loose parts (exhaust, protective bars, etc.).

Actions after receiving a claim submission

  • Compensa will calculate the amount of the loss.
  • The decision will be made according to the law, but no later than 30 days after receiving all the necessary documents.
  • Payment will be made within 5 working days after the decision is made.

As of January 1, 2017, amendments to the MTPL (OCTA) law are in effect, which provide for a 30% reduction of the payment from the amount indicated in the loss calculation (excluding VAT).

Important to know!

The unpaid amount can be recovered if, no later than four months after the insurance payout, you submit to the insurer an invoice for vehicle repair or restoration and a proof of payment for that invoice.

After receiving these documents, the insurer will make a decision within 15 days regarding the unpaid portion and will pay it according to the actual repair costs, including the VAT amount listed on the invoice, not exceeding the total loss amount stated in the loss calculation (including VAT).

Note: The new payment calculation procedure does not apply in cases of total vehicle loss.

If the accident occurs abroad

  • According to the laws of the country, report the accident to the police or complete the agrred statement form.
  • Record the registration details and insurer of the vehicle involved in the accident.
If this is not possible, after returning to Latvia, contact the Latvian Motor Insurers Bureau for information on where and how to submit your claim.
